Abstract

Zebra Disease of Sisal: Challenge for Sisal Development in Indonesia and Its Control Management

ABSTRACT

Zebra disease is one of important diseases of Sisal (Agave spp.), which is caused by a fungus Phytophthora nicotianae Breda de Haan. There are three stadia of the disease, ie: zebra leaf spot, bole rot, and spike rot. Infection on lamina would decrease fibre quality, and severe infection would caused yield loss and death of the plant. The development sisal plant using the new variety H11648, which is susceptible to the disease should be anticipated its outbreak and spread. This paper reviews the zebra disease and its integrated control management including breeding program, biological control, the use of botanical and synthetic fungicides. The development program in NTB and NTT should be supported with adequate research program, especially in controlling the disease.
